Healing Help

As you may or may not know, Nana (Jenna) had ACL surgery last week which means she had christmas break full of a whole lot of sitting around and recovering =( .  Part of her recovery is sitting in this machine for 6 hours (yes....SIX hours) a day while it slowly bends and extends her leg.

Yesterday, Zane and Ayden also 'hurt' their leg and needed to fix it =)

What the photos don't show is the boys and Nana huddled around the iPads together comparing notes on Angry Birds. [Trust me...the way these boys play there are notes to be taken!].

It was down right adorable.  What an awesome Aunt!!

Feel better soon Nana!!

Overheard Between Cousins

[while trying to fall asleep during their first sleepover]

[Picture myself, J, Mike, Dash and Mimi huddled around the tiny monitor screen, volume turned on high]

Ayden: I lost my binkie... Zane can you help me find my binkie please?

Zane: [exhausted but wanting to be helpful.  Zane sits up a little dazed and begins to frantically search the sheets and floor].......What is a binkie!?!

Ayden: [in an authoritative explanatory voice] I said, BIIIIIIINKIEEEEE! [Read - Do you understand the words that are coming out of my mouth?!?!]

************************************

[First thing in the morning the cousins were playing together in the playroom clearing away their morning groggies]

Ayden to Thea [in his kind sweet care-taker voice]: Hi Thea!.......Hi Thea!.........Hi Thea!

Ayden to Zane: She is not saying hi to me Zane.

Zane: I think I know why........its because she is not a morning girl. [in  a very certain voice] I have seen this before.

How you know parenting has changed you...

It wouldn't be a stretch to call my self 'Type-A'. Nor a stretch to say I am a planner, an organizer, a person who likes things 'just so'.

(you can stop chuckling now...I know I am very much all of these things....no stretching needed)

BUT....I believe (whole heartedly) that people can change. [I could go into a whole soliloquy about this, but will save that for another time].  Today I will share with you a moment I had recently where I knew being a parent had changed me.

This is not some earth shattering moment....so keep you expectations low, but it meant enough to stick out in my mind.

Two Saturdays ago [after running 19 miles and deciding that in fact that meant it was OK to be a not-so-great-mother and plop my children down in from of Horton Hears a Who while I rested my legs] Ayden (who of course didn't want to watch TV when mommy was actually letting him), decided it was time to decorate the tree.  The tree had been up for a week......just lights and no ornaments.

Thankfully, Mimi (aka Gram-e) was around and enthusiastically offered to help [yes, while I remained firmly planted on the couch].

The boys and Mimi had a great time picking up the ornaments and placing them on the tree....and I do mean placing them.  It took a few broken ornaments for Ayden to understand that you have to actually hooooook the thing on.

In true Ayden style, Ayden had a very particular way and he wanted to decorate the tree and very particular places he wanted the ornaments..........which was......directly on top of each other.

So, we now have a beautifully lit tree with three lovely heavily congested ornament hanging areas. All  of which are about three feet off the ground =)

Since birth (it feels like) it has been ingrained in me by my mother, that ornaments should hang proportionately around the tree, larger on the bottom, smaller on top, and for the placement to be proper, they must be able to hang (literally hang) from the branch without leaning on, resting against, or in any other manner touching another branch. [I have no idea where I get some of my idiosyncrasies]. So, needless to say, Ayden's 'ornament hanging style' didn't fit in my mold.

After the split second panic of oh my goodness I have to 'fix' the tree, I felt this warm emotion roll over me of pride. It was Ayden's tree now. And we are definitely going to keep it exactly how he decorated it. So, now every time I pass the tree and see my clumps of ornaments, I think....awwww, my big boy did that and he is SO PROUD of himself for decorating the tree.

So, from my learning moment to you.....whether you are a new parent or old, don't forget what is important, and that is that you support your children (old or young) in their own path, no matter how they decide to decorate their trees along the way, it is important they have the love and support of their family.

[and don't worry, as they get older you will have ample opportunity to impart your wise tree decorating ways on them ;) ]

Here are some pictures taken on my phone from the couch.....

Love me some beanie!

You may remember pictures of Ayden in this hat [perhaps you can help me find them in all these posts somewhere if you do! ;)]. Either way you can see from the (old old old) picture on top of the blog that there is yet another picture of one of my boys in a beanie.

What can I say....I just LOVE beanies.  I could not wait for it to get cool outside so I could throw this on Gavin and take some pictures.  However, a testament to my 180 on the red hair....I do feel a little sad when he has it on bc you cannot see his red-a-licious hair!.

How can you resist pinching those cheeks!!

Sunday Morning Dance Party

Sunday for most families is a day of rest.... Not in the Riley house.

Though this is the only day of the week that neither J nor I has to get up and do something, the whole house is always up before the sun.

And often times we find ourselves partaking in a little of this....

(notice the dark sky outside the window)

Also so notice that Ayden is obsessed with watching himself dance....I think we may have another 'theater boy' in the family.

Gavin walks...

So, one moment my little baby is learning to crawl and the next....

Yes, it is only a push toy....but hey that is the gateway walker.....

This kid is just always happy.
